5 Gorgeous Greenhouses To Visit On A Rainy Day

Want to do something outdoorsy but the weather isn’t ideal? Coming from Toronto, I often have that problem for the large part of the year. When I can’t get outside and explore due to below freezing weather conditions or terrible rain, I head to a green space nearby. I always feel at ease whenever I’m in a greenhouse or conservatory, surrounded by palm trees and fig plants. Spend as much time as you’d like any time of the year, walking around and enjoying all the exotic plants we don’t get to see in our own backyard. 

1. Allan Gardens

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Allan Gardens Conservatory features six garden-filled greenhouses displaying all kinds plants, from palm trees to cacti. The greenhouse is over 16,000 square feet and has tropical flowers from all over the world. There are also seasonal displays that are special throughout the year. The conservatory is open all year round and is the perfect escape from rainy or cold weather. Outside the conservatory is a park and off-leash dog area.

2. Centennial Park

Location: Etobicoke, Ontario

This incredible conservatory has three main areas to explore, each completely distinct. The main greenhouse contains 200 diverse tropical plants that bloom year-round, including bromeliads, orchids, hibiscus, gingers, palms and crotons. There are even fruit trees, such as papaya and banana. Located in the south wing is an arid house, which is home to exotic cacti and succulents, including aloe, agave, and opuntia. The north wing is the display house and features a collection of local trees and seasonal displays that are changed regularly. This greenhouse also is home to a few animals like goldfish, turtles, and birds.

3. Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory

Location: Cambridge, Ontario

Admission Cost: Adults ($15.00) | Senior ($12.50) | Children ($7.50)

Walk through a huge variety of free-flying, exotic butterflies surrounded by lush and gorgeous gardens. Experience over 100 species of shrubs, plants, trees, and insects inside this incredible greenhouse. Dine at the Chrysalis Cafe for a delicious lunch with your choice of salads, sandwiches and more.

4. Tropical Greenhouse

Location: Ottawa, Ontario

Admission Cost: Free

The recently rebuilt Tropical Greenhouse is located on Maple Drive, across from the Saunders building, and now features a more diverse collection of exotic tropical plants. The octagonal shape of the building was originally built at Major’s Hill Park in downtown Ottawa, and moved to its current location in the 1930s.

5. Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse

Location: Niagara, Ontario

Admission Cost: Adults ($7.00) | Children ($4.00)

Nestled in the region of Niagara, only a short walk from Table Rock Centre, the Floral Showroom showcases 7 unique shows during the year which change depending on the season. Indoor exhibitions display tropical flowers and exotic plants, like orchids, succulents and more, in these lovely lush gardens that are maintained all year-round. With their constantly changing shows, something is always in bloom.

Gage Park Greenhouse

Location: Hamilton, Ontario

Admission Cost: Free

The newly built greenhouse is around 14,000 square feet and features a variety of subtropical plants, unique species, and palm trees. Make sure to check out waterfalls and adorable pond, filled with fish, turtles, and waterlilies. It’s a bit smaller than the other ones, so if you happen to be in the area it’s worth checking out.
